EV Charging & Sustainability
@ The YPSI
While we promote saving the old gothic church, we also aim to be sustainable in our operations. Our four new EV Solar Powered Charge Stations were provided through a state-awarded grant. These can also supply power during a power outage.
Solar Powered Universal EV Charging:
Discounted charging rate - lowest in the City of Ypsilanti
Pull handle for NACS connector (TESLA and newer EVs)
Push button for J1772 connector (most vehicles)
Solar Chargers A & B share power: For faster charging, use a different Solar Charger if available.
Share your charge on Plug Share
Parking
Yes, you can park on the metal plate under the solar panels
Lot parking is free while charging only.
Pay to park when not actively charging.
Text PAY to 734-436-3853 or Pay via AirGarage

EV Charging Cost:
Beginning in June of 2026, we will offer solar station EV charging through the Tesla app. Like our chargers, this works for both Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles.
Why are the Solar Chargers No Longer Free?
Initially, we had credited funds to offer free public charging. This allowed us to gather data about public demand and optimize equipment efficiency. While we are thrilled by the popularity of our stations, we have unfortunately depleted these funds. We appreciate everyone who was part of this initial trial period. This data will help us to continue to offer EV charging consistently, using clean energy, and at the best price possible. Thanks for continuing to support our nonprofit and the restoration of this historic asset!
Other Sustainability Initiatives:
Solar panels on the south “Annex” wing of our building
LED lighting
Cloth hand towels in our restrooms
Recycling bins available for patrons
Washable cups for water at events (discourage plastic water bottles)
No printed tickets- all digital
